ABOUT

SPRA is a member of the Central Pennsylvania Swim League (CPSL).  The league is made up of four teams: Park Forest, Penns Valley, SPRA and Welch.  The league board is made up of parent representatives from each team.  The board monitors the league rules, establishes the schedule and coordinates the business of maintaining an active league.  All teams pay dues to the league; all members in the league must be registered and have paid their fees no later than June 30th.

PRACTICE

Swim practice is a time for each team member to develop his or her skills.  Swimmers will be divided according to age and skill level.

Coaches ask that swimmers arrive a few minutes early, so that they are ready on the pool deck when practice is scheduled to start. Swimmers must be picked up after their assigned workout time.  The coaches are not responsible for your child after their scheduled practice is finished, as they are concentrating on the next group of swimmers.

Swimmers are encouraged to attend practices on a regular basis as their schedule permits.  Swimmers, who workout with a club team, must attend one SPRA practice per week.

SPRA offers lessons for all levels of swimmers if you feel your swimmer requires additional stroke instruction.

TEAM ACTIVITIES

One or two volunteers will organize planned activities outside of practice for our swimmers. A list of activities and corresponding dates will be sent to you and will also be posted on the bulletin board at the pool.  If you have an idea for a team activity that you would like to organize, please let us know!

PARENT MEETING

One parent is encouraged to attend the parent meeting on on Saturday, June 1 at 6 pm at SPRA pool.  If your child has swum on the SPRA Swim Team in the past, the meeting will serve as a  review of how swim meets are run and what to expect during the swim season. If you are new to the team, it is a great opportunity to meet the Head Coach, and parent reps and answer questions.

VOLUNTEERING GUIDELINES

In order for our team to be successful in running a swim meet efficiently all families must volunteer. Please review the volunteer guidelines below for how many times you will need to volunteer this season.  Please volunteer for spots during the 1st and 2nd half of the meet.  Please feel free to volunteer beyond these guidelines if you are able.

  • 1 swimmer = 4 times
  • 2 swimmers = 5 times
  • 3 swimmers = 6 times
  • 4 swimmers = 7 times

Each team must provide volunteers to work the following jobs at each meet:

Position Responsibility
STROKE AND TURN JUDGE Watch to see that swimmers use legal strokes
TIMERS Use stopwatch to time & record the swimmer’s time on the card
RUNNER Distribute cards to timers & collect cards to take to tent – Wear sneakers.
SEEDING Seat swimmers in preparation for upcoming events
CARDS Distribute swimmers’ cards before the meet begins
AVERAGER Average the times on the swimmers’ cards
COMPUTER * Enter the results of each event into the computer
SCORER Verify that the information was entered into the computer accurately
REFEREE** The chief official of the meet
STARTER/ANNOUNCER** Announce events & calls swimmers to start
CONCESSION WORKERS Set up, sell food/beverages, grill, & break down. Children are not permitted behind the concession stand. You may leave to watch your child swim his/her events.

CONCESSION DONATIONS

The swim team’s primary method of raising funds is the concession stand. This helps pay team expenses such as coaching salaries and team supplies.  Every season we ask each family to donate non-perishable items at the beginning of the season and perishable items to be brought to the pool on the night of home meets.  Please sign up for items that are non-perishable and perishable.

All families are asked to sign up to donate a combination of BOTH non-perishable and perishable items using the following guidelines:

  • 1 swimmer = 3 items
  • 2 swimmers = 4 items
  • 3 swimmers = 5 items
  • 4 swimmers = 6 items

SWIM MEETS

Meet signups will be sent out via email. Swimmers must be signed up by the deadline if they plan to swim.

  • Tuesday Meet Deadline – the Friday before the meet.
  • Thursday Meet Deadline – the Monday before the meet.

Each event in a meet will have various heats.  The coaches will try to give everyone an opportunity to swim each event at some time during the season so they can get a time for championships.  A swimmer will be disqualified in an event if proper stroke technique is not used. It is important that your child stay for all assigned events.  If he/she is in a relay and leaves, the other members of the relay team are unable to swim the event.

***If you cannot swim after you have signed up, please contact the head coach ASAP.***

Swimmers may swim a maximum of 4 events per meet (3 individual and 1 relay OR 2 individual and 2 relays).  Coaches will determine what a child will swim based on the number of swimmers attending each meet and the swimmer’s ability to swim an event.  If your child is signed up for more than 4 events, please notify the coaches immediately, so your child does not get disqualified from all his/her events in the meet.  The only time you can swim 5 events is when there are 7 or fewer people on the team in your age group for the entire season.

Championship meets will be held July 23 and 25, 2023.  In order to be eligible for championships, you must swim in at least 2 meets during the regular season. Championship seeding is determined by a swimmer’s best time in an event from one of the regular summer meets.  In Championships, you may swim a total of 3 individual events in your age group and 1 relay.  Swimmers choose their individual events, and the coaches decide the relays.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

Be prepared for a swim meet regardless of weather.  You should arrive at the pool at the assigned time.  If a thunderstorm arises during a meet we must clear the pool and deck as quickly as possible.  Wait in your car until an announcement is made as to whether we will call the meet or try to resume after the storm.  Do not leave– If at all possible, the meet will resume after the storm passes.

Practices will be held in the rain at the discretion of the coaches.  If there is thunder and lightning, practice will be cancelled.  Often, the only way to find out if practice is cancelled is to drive to the pool.  We will try to post any weather related changes on SPRA Dolphins Swim Team Facebook page.
