Membership & Bonds

πŸ”‘ What Does It Mean to Be a Bondholder at SPRA?

Being a bondholder at SPRA (Science Park Recreation Association) means more than pool access β€” it means you are a co-owner of a member-driven community.

SPRA is a nonprofit, member-owned swim club. When you join by purchasing a bond, you become a 1/350th owner of the organization. With only 350 bonds in existence, every bondholder plays a critical role in shaping the present and future of the pool.

With only 350 bonds, every bondholder has a stake in and commitment to the financial viability of the community. Dues are not optional β€” they fund the operation of SPRA. Unless you freeze your membership (which requires an annual inactive fee), sell your bond, or formally relinquish it back to SPRA ownership, you are required to pay dues every year β€” just as you would HOA fees or property taxes.

πŸ“˜ What Is a Bond?

To become a part of SPRA, you must purchase a bond β€” either directly from SPRA (when available) or from an existing member. This is not a standard pool membership. A bond represents:

  • 🏠 Ownership share in the Association
  • 🏊 Access to unlimited pool use (dues paid)
  • πŸ—³οΈ Voice in SPRA governance and decisions

Note: Bonds are not refundable by SPRA. You must sell or transfer your bond to another household using the Bond Transfer Form.

🀝 Responsibilities of Bond Ownership

Owning a bond is a privilege, but it comes with responsibilities. As a bondholder, you areΒ not just a customerΒ β€” you are aΒ co-owner of the property and operations.

That means:

  • βœ… Paying Annual Dues:Β These dues fund the operations, staff, insurance, utilities, and upkeep of the pool. Without them, the pool cannot function
  • πŸ› οΈSupporting Shared Infrastructure:Β When major issues arise β€” like the recent filter failure β€” bondholders are expected to lean in, not walk away. There is no β€œthey” who will fix it. There is only β€œus.” If the pool faces a setback, it’s your investment at stake β€” and your responsibility to help support recovery.
  • 🌱Promoting Long-Term Sustainability:Β SPRA relies on its members to think beyond a single season. This includes maintaining a positive, constructive relationship with vendors, volunteers, and one another.
  • πŸ—³οΈParticipating in Governance:Β You are encouraged to attend the annual meeting, vote on pool matters, and even serve on the Board.

🧾 Bond Ownership & Eligibility

A membership bond includes you, your spouse or partner, and any dependent children under 26 years of age who still list your household as their primary residence.

πŸ”’ Why Only 350 Bonds?

SPRA is intentionally limited to just 350 bondholding families β€” and that’s by design.

By keeping membership small, we preserve the peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere that makes our pool so distinctive. Fewer members means:

  • More space to relaxΒ β€” no overcrowding, even on hot summer days
  • Plentiful seatingΒ and shaded areas without the rush to β€œclaim a chair”
  • Heated waterΒ and a clean, well-maintained facility
  • Flexible, affordable swim lessonsΒ and priority access for member families
  • A strong sense of communityΒ with fun, low-pressure social events for all ages
  • A real voice in pool decisionsΒ β€” bondholders influence how SPRA is managed and maintained

In short, your bond isn’t just access to a pool β€” it’s a stake in something special.
